Structure note 2

Frame measurement: why shops put a car on a bench

After a meaningful hit, shops compare the car’s measurements with manufacturer specs. The goal is to see whether the structure returned to square.

The short version

  1. Measurement finds twists and shifts you cannot see by eye.
  2. Manufacturer specs set the targets.
  3. Some cars use unibody designs rather than a separate frame.

Unibody versus body-on-frame

Most passenger cars use a unibody; trucks may use a ladder frame. Terminology on estimates follows the design.

When it is recommended

Side impacts, undercarriage hits and airbag deployments often trigger measurement.

Reading the report

Ask the shop to show before-and-after numbers.

Insurance conversations

Measurement can justify repair hours on an estimate.
